A compressor can make a drum hit sit closer, a bassline hold together, or a whole mix feel more connected. Listen to the first impact of a kick, then to the tail that follows it. If the transient is all you hear, the beat may feel sharp but thin. If the tail swallows every gap, it may lose momentum. Attack, release, and threshold are ways of deciding how the music breathes. The settings matter because they change the listener’s sense of motion.
There is no sacred hardware recipe. A digital compressor can be musical; a vintage box can be too much. What matters is level-matched listening and the courage to bypass an effect when the unprocessed sound carries more feeling.
